My Weakness Makeover

Do you have a weakness for a particular food that you just can’t live with out? Even if you know how bad it is for you, you just can’t help it?

For my husband it would be onions, even though they are not bad for him…the effects are bad for me and the girls.

For Kailey it would be hot tamale candy ~ a dentist’s best friend.

For Jordyn it would have to be french onion dip…straight up, no chips!

For me it’s barbecue chips, any kind…any brand. After looking at the labels in the grocery store this weekend to try and find the “healthiest” one and the one with the shortest ingredient list, I decided to  give a hand at trying to make them myself. How hard could it be?  Potatoes with a little bit of oil and some spices minus all the preservatives. Easy enough!

Homemade Barbecue Chips

  • 3 russet potatoes
  • 1 tbl. olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp garlic salt
  • 1/4 tsp chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper

Heat oven to 450 degrees and combine spices. Slice the potatoes very thin or let your food processor do it for you.

Coat the potato slices with olive oil and add the spices until all the slices are completely covered. Spread on a baking sheet in a single layer.

Bake for about 20 minutes, watch them closely as they are apt to burn since they are so thin…trust me!

Voila!!! They taste like they are right out of the bag, only better!!!

Is it easier opening up a bag of chips and popping them into your mouth? Absolutely! But sometimes it’s just fun trying to re-create one of your favs and making them even better!

Not a fan of barbecue? Omit the spices and just add salt for plain chips!

Happy Monday! Smile

  1. I love this! I feel your pain! My Golden Rule is if I can't make it myself, I can't have it. I'm glad to see a recipe for something I also love to eat. My husband & son will thank you. I can't wait to share this on Plan My Dinner. Plus I will link it back to you for my readers to see!
If you havn't already stop by our sister blog & post this awsum recipe on our MIXED BAG MONDAY BLOG HOP. It's a great way to see what others have goin on & get followers yourself.
    Have a great Monday,

  2. I love, love, love baking baked chips using sweet potatoes or beets! My weakness food is nachos. If I see some at a party, I want it!

  3. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog, Kristy! I like yours too! Looks like you did a good job slicing your potatoes without the dangers of a mandolin ;-) These look like a great snack!

  4. I will definitely have to try these!!! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I would love if you would link up with these recipes (I do a link up every Monday).

  5. I am addicted to bbq chips. I could eat an entire bag easily. These look fantastic!
I once tried homemade potato chips but fried them and they wouldn't really crisp up as I wanted them to. Baking sounds like the much better and easier option.
    Great idea!

  6. Oooh, I love BBQ chips too! They are def my favorite flavor. I made chips like that too in the microwave, not sure if it would be any easier, because you can only do one plate at a time, but they were SO good!

  7. I love bbq chips and these looks great! I don't have a food processor that could do that (I just have a stupid mini chopper LOL) but I've been wanting a mandolin for the longest time and that would work too!

  8. Very cool (tasty) idea. I am a sucker for almost any kind of chip!

  9. Yum! Your bbq chips look better than any packaged ones I've seen.
    My weakness: french fries :)

  10. Yum! Any kind of chips are my weakness! I so want to try these! Thanks!

  11. Hey, thanks for leaving me a comment! M&Ms are the one food I could not live without, but those chips look good. I may have to give them a try! :)

  12. MMM!!! I could sit down with you and help polish off a bowl of these! Nicely done!

  13. Since a lot of bbq chips aren't vegan (some use milk powders in the seasoning and stuff) this would be a great vegan bbq chip recipe!!! I really want to try this!

(Although my personal weakness is tortilla chips and guac!)

  14. Such a good idea to make home made chips!! I have too many food weaknesses!!

  15. Those look delicious!! Also, hand over some of those hot tamales while you're at it. I LOVE those little suckers.

  16. oh my word! What an absolutely AMAZING idea! I must try it out.
