A Crude Awakening

Food Inc

Am I the only one who has taken this long to sit and watch this movie? Well I finally did the other night…

The only word that comes to my mind is disturbing, and how can I be so naïve?  I will never shop the grocery store the same way ever again. Luckily, I am not a huge fan of meat, I very rarely eat red meat, no pork  just usually chicken and that’s only once or twice a week.  Needless to say there is no chicken in my fridge today and frankly I don’t care if there ever is again. My husband of course watched this with me and was quite taken back by it, then again his first concern is “What about Tom Turkey”???? lol

So for dinner tonight we had pizza of course since it’s Friday. I thought I’d go out on a limb and try something completely different…beans. Knowing that hubby is not a huge fan of beans, probably one of the only things he doesn’t eat with enthusiasm, I had my fingers crossed.  I thought what the heck, after that movie he can’t expect me to cook up a meat lovers pizza. I found this recipe from Eating Well, click here to see the recipe.

Caramelized Onion and White Bean Pizza

I sliced up a large onion in the food processor and browned them slowly in a pan with olive oil and a little salt until golden brown.  Take half the onions and reserve them for later.

Add a can of white beans to the remaining onions and cook for a few minutes. Next add this mixture to the food processor with water and vinegar and process until it is a course paste.

Pre-bake the pizza dough for about 10 minutes at 450 degrees. Then just spread the bean mixture on the crust, added the reserved onions on top along with sliced tomatoes and I used mozzarella cheese.

Put back in oven for about 13 minutes until cheese is melted and crust is golden.

Looks delicious, right? Hubby didn’t think so at all, poor guy tried to choke down ate the pizza to much dismay. Can you say operation failure. I thought it was good, not great. Need to dress up the bean mixture a little and add more onions. It’s all a work in progress…the pizza,  my husband and our eating habits.

Wish me luck!!

  1. I love Food Inc...in the eye opening way.

It changed the way I look at food - and the way I make decisions at the grocery store.

It is so sad that pizza wasn't the greatest. I was so excited for a new pizza recipe!

  3. I like the idea of the beans. I've not tried using beans on a pizza yet, but have heard other people mention it. I think the key would definitely be making sure the white beans have lots of flavor. Hope you try it again!

  4. Aw I think your pizza looks great! There aren't exactly a lot of things that my boyfriend and I both really enjoy eating, so we are working on it too!

  5. Kristy - I have done the bean pizza thing and it works great if you puree roasted garlic, turmeric, and cumin in and add feta or goat cheese to the top along with tomatoes and kalamata olives. I hope you try it again.. :)

  7. Food Inc. nearly made me a vegetarian after seeing the slaughter house scenes. I look at food differently after seeing that film.
